Befekir Kebede Photography | While we are on the topic of soccer in the wake of the World Cup, here are some photos and words for thought. As in anywhere in Africa, soccer is a much loved and enjoyed sport in Ethiopia. In fact, it isn't regarded just as a form of sport – it is a form of culture, lifestyle and even obsession many can't live without. In the little time I lived in Ethiopia as a photographer before my relocation to Australia, I didn't get a chance to document the soccer culture in Ethiopia so as to backup the claim I am making here. But over the past several years, I have had many chances to take photographs of Ethiopians engaged in various soccer activities. From weekend training sessions of small soccer clubs in suburban Melbourne to a massive annual soccer festival at a high capacity stadium in down-town Los Angeles, I have taken pictures of Ethiopians practising soccer and/or of Ethiopians getting together in the name of it. Here is a small selection.
